Sometimes a flash of somewhere appears brightly in my mind. A geological Sprite with no known coordinates. I know it’s out there, I’ve been there. A long scramble up a mountainside in Pennsylvania that I climbed as a boy, looking down in the valley at the interstate. A rock bigger than me and more slippery than me standing in the cold Atlantic waves on the coast of Maine. A horse leading me back to the barn, making one last attempt to kill me by knocking me off where the barn corner juts out into the path. He’s done this before. A tide pool in Newport Beach with a spread of anemones flowing in the gentle tidal flow, looking to go somewhere as they wave their arms, but firmly glued to the rocks.
My mind can take me to those places so fast, so clearly, smelling, wondering, admiring, and spell bound with an intensity similar to Post Traumatic Stress, but the opposite feelings of fear or loss of control. Instead, intense calm, pleasure, simple spectacles all, but intense feelings of grand waves.
I can do and feel all that in a second or two and it took place many years ago. How lucky I am.
