Food Security

March 2, 2014

Prov. 22:9 He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor.

The Food Bank in Lincoln does what it's supposed to do, get food to many people who need it. The director of the Food Bank sat with the LPFD Chaplains recently and gave us an overview of what it is that he does and the Food Bank does. Feed People, like I said. As I listened to the director, I was amazed at just how many people though. And children. Lets just say it was many more than I expected.

The director did a good job of broadening our awareness of the problem of food security. It is a big challenge here in this corner of Nebraska.

Our Capitol View church began years ago responding to the problem of food security by joining another feeding program called Foodnet. This all volunteer feeding program takes food from the community kitchens, restaurants and hospitals and makes it available as a shopping and meal experience for needy patrons. There are over 20 sites around town that conduct a weekly food net shopping time. Capitol View is on Sunday afternoon and volunteers start showing up late saturday evening and sunday morning to make a difference in the Near South Neighborhood. It's a great program and I'm glad to be involved with it. You can usually find me on the first and second Sundays making soup and sharing it with our clients. I can't tell you how much I enjoy sharing a little food and conversation with them. It fills me up to listen to them as they keep their courage up and get a little something for their pantry.
